BELLINGHAM — The Capital Improvements Committee recommended $300,000 to refurbish Fire Department Engine 2. A 2019 KME Predator with 81,000 miles and 6,684 engine hours, the engine has corroding aluminum body panels. The fire chief and a deputy chief said the work would strip it to bare metal and extend its frontline life by roughly eight to 10 years, and said "aluminum will not rot.
It corrodes." They said replacement could be needed within two to three years without the work. The project is estimated to take three to 12 months. The committee also recommended about $575,000 for a previously approved construction project that returns to Town Meeting after retained earnings fell short.
